Obituary
Although Phil and Kathy never had children, that didn't stop them from loving everyone else's children. They spoiled them as their own. He also didn't mind correcting when the child was wrong. They attended birthday parties, graduations and all types of celebrations.
Phil was in love with the children of Honduras and they loved him. He made over 20 mission trips with Missions in Action. He participated in the manual labor of construction, led the team singing at night and loved sitting in the park making ballons creations while the rest of the team went shopping. Even after he could longer go, he became a close friend to team members and supported Missions In Action sponsor program.
Phil and Kathy found a church home at Jones Memorial UMC in Forest Park. He was a vital member of the choir, ran the sound system and later became sextant after he retired from GM. For many years he was a part of The Jonesmen gospel singing group. He ran the sound system and filled in for the tenor. Music was a part of his soul. He would even go to nursing homes with a singing ministry for their patients.
Over the years he made many deep and lasting friendships. He was a faithful member of the Headland Highlanders High School group. Loyal to the end. He frequently participated in various roles of the Atlanta South Walk to Emmaus. When you called Phil Guptill friend, he was yours to the end. Good time, bad times, it didn't matter he was always there.
The cross that he so frequently wore and is being buried with is made from GM automobile paint. Layer after layer of paint cut from one of the assembly lines in Doraville where he worked and retired from.
Phil was a devoted Christian and now rests in the arms of his Savior and God. Rest in peace. "Well done good and faithful servant, enter into your rest."
There will be a funeral service at 1:00 PM on Saturday, November 15, 2025, in the chapel of Thomas L Scroggs Funeral Directors. There will be a visitation and hour prior. The interment will follow the arrive at Fairview Memorial Park.
