Marvin Chisnell BIO

DOB: 10 November 1929

POB: Akron, OH

PARENTS: Deceased / unk

SIBLINGS: Two brothers deceased / Marvin was the youngest of three boys

Marvin's parents moved to Atlanta, GA for employment. When his father suddenly passed away, his mother was unable to support three growing boys, therefore, they were taken to the United Methodist Children's Home for boys. Many boys lived in a large room and slept in small beds that the boys made. This was considered as a Carpenters Skill Training for the boys. Eventually Marvin's mother removed her children from the United Methodist Children's Home and they moved to New York. Unable to find employment, without money for boarding and food, they lived on the streets, looking for food that was thrown away on streets and in trash cans. Marvin said, they were so hungry, so very hungry and starving. Any type of food found was considered eatable, even banana and potato peels. One day out of desperation, Marvin said his mother put him in a wash tub and held him under water. He said he can still see his mother's face as she held him under water saying "you have to die". Marvin's oldest brother pulled his mother away, saving Marvin's life. Marvin became a Ward of the State and the NY State employees found a Family in West Virginia that volunteered to take Marvin. Without adult accompanying him to West Virginia, they placed him on the train for his trip to live with this unknown Family. He said they did not have much money, had Family to support, but they were willing to take him in. Marvin said he dropped out of school, taking on odd jobs to assist with expenses. As a young teenager he moved to Atlanta, GA looking for employment. He was hired at the City of Atlanta Sanitation Department, he said he drove and old beat up garbage truck, pay was $3.99, working 10 to 12 hours a day. This gave him enough pay to live in a Boarding Home, sharing expenses with others. Marvin met the lovely Marceille Anderson, he called her Peach (because of her peach like smile) and love of his life, his Ada. They married in 1954 and were blessed with their son, Tracy in 1959. Marvin and Marceille purchased their dream home in Morrow in 1967. With a desire for advancement, Marvin enrolled in GED Classes and on many occasions, he sat at the table studying with Tracy. Working many years in the Water Department, he applied for a Supervisory position and was selected. He worked for the Water Department for 30 plus years and when a Reduction in Personnel Force happened, Marvin elected to retire at the age of 57. He remained active, assisting neighbors with their lawn care, he attended Morrow City Council Meetings, trying to raise the issue of citizens throwing trash into the creek. Attended Neighborhood Watch Meetings and became a Block Captain. He was member of the Geezerd Squad, as the Senior Geezerd helping clean Morrow's Trail and Pathway System of over grown bushes, trees and trash. He was Member of the Neighbors Helping Neighbors Committee helping citizens with mowing, edging sidewalks, cut shrubs, clean yards and driveways. Marvin remained very active in his voting obligations. When he no longer could drive, he did not hesitate to call and ask for a ride in order to vote.

With his intense love for his home Marvin took extreme pride in his and Marceille's home. He mowed his lawn to his exact specifications, edging and trimming every week. If he saw leaves falling into the yard, he was in his yard getting up every leaf and gum balls.

Marvin truly loved his home and elected to stay in his home until he passed away in the morning of 30 May 2025.
