George Robert "Bob" Oliver

June 25, 1932 — February 14, 2016

George Robert "Bob" Oliver, 83, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 14, 2016 at his home in Jonesboro, Ga. The firstborn son of George and Helen Oliver, he was raised in East Point, Ga. He attended Russell High School and Emory University where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega. He married his sweetheart, Joyce Garrison Oliver, in 1953. He subsequently served in the U.S. Army in Anchorage, Alaska. After completing his service, the Oliver family moved back to Atlanta where he attended law school at Emory University. After graduation and being admitted to the State Bar of Georgia in 1959, his prestigious law career included numerous positions with local and state bar associations. He received an honorary Doctor’s Degree of Public Service in 2001 from Clayton State University, where a scholarship for legal studies is also endowed in his name. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Clayton County Chamber of Commerce in 2014. Oliver and his wife Joyce were active members of their church, Jones Memorial First United Methodist Church in Lake City, where Oliver served in many capacities. Oliver enjoyed spending time with his family and traveling, which included frequent trips to homes at Lake Rabun and Hilton Head Island as well as vacations overseas and golf trips. He will be sorely missed and forever loved by his extensive family, which included his wife, Joyce Oliver; daughters, Kim Porter(Mike) of Atlanta, Susan Weiss(Walt) of Peachtree City; sister, Carolyn Tolleson of Peachtree City; brothers, Jim Oliver(Sam) of Jonesboro, Charlie Oliver(Sharon) of Atlanta; grandchildren, Madison Weiss, Kelsey Weiss, Justin Porter, Matthew Porter; great grandchildren, Julian Porter, Bryson Porter, many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 18, 2016, with the memorial service following at 2 p.m. at Jones Memorial United Methodist Church in Lake City, Ga. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to either Jones Memorial First United Methodist Church in Lake City, Ga. or to the Clayton State University Foundation for the G.
